A long white envelope addressed to a stranger. Curiosity gets the better of me and I open it. It’s a letter from a daughter to her father. Estranged by the sounds of it.
There’s a return address if the father wants to get in touch, but the address on the envelope is just across the road. What do I do? Do I give it to the man or return it to the girl? It’s decided. It’s not my decision to make whether they’re relationship starts again. It’s theirs.
I head over and post the letter through their letterbox. I’ll never know if this changed their lives or not. But that’s their story. Not mine.

Very good point & not what I was expecting. I liked the change! Why do we usually feel compelled to “do”- when we are not involved. Your comments about it being their story & not yours were a good reminder for me.

I thought you kept well to the brief – my only small criticism (and it’s quite possible because I have a tendency to be a little ditsy at times and to miss the point) Is that I’m not sure if the letter ends up getting posted through the girls door or the fathers? It says ‘the address on the envelope’ is just across the road – (but i’m not sure if you mean the return address or the actual address), I tried to look for clues, however, the reference to ‘ their’ letter box instead of ‘his’ or ‘hers’ didn’t provide the answer! Please tell me as I’d love to know whose hands you left the ‘decision’ in – the fathers or the daughters?! It’s a lovely piece that leaves me wanting to know more! Thank you for sharing!

Ahh just as I’d hoped! 🙂 I’m glad the letter reached the father – in doing that, you left the story open to possibilities, it lends the story an element of hope, which I like! xx

I think that would be great! You could even expand on this post – rather then tell what happens next – you could consider writing the ‘before’ story, how did it lead to this? Why have father and daughter become separated? 🙂 I look forward to seeing your series, whichever path you take with it! Good luck 🙂
